The Filipino concept of team work

By Zigfred Diaz

The closes English equivalent of "Team work" in Filipino is the word Bayanihan. However this Filipino word equivalent of team work, speaks of more than that. Bayanihan is derived from the word bayan which means "nation, town or community." Hence, the word bayanihan actually means a "spirit of communal unity or effort to achieve a particular goal."

The origin of the word bayanihan comes from the traditions observed in Philippine towns where community members help a certain family move to another place of residence. In the olden times, the whole community helps out the family that moves to another place by carrying the whole house to its new location. Bamboo poles are utilized to carry the house.

A lot of National Filipino Artists produce paintings that depicts the carrying of a house from one location to another. This portrays the spirit of Baynihan and speaks of the Filipino unity. Artists love to use this scenario in their paintings because it conveys a message that a particular goal can be achieved if only Filipinos work together in unity.

In modern times, since houses are already made of concrete, it is impossible for us to see an actual Bayanihan taking place. They say that even if we don't see bayanihan anymore through the carrying of houses, the spirit of bayanihan is still with us as a people.

Sadly in my own opinion, the spirit of Bayanihan has been abandoned in these modern times. It is not because houses are made of concrete that the practice of Bayanihan is not portrayed anymore. Rather it is because the hearts of men today are made of stone that they do not feel anymore the patriotism and the love for our country that our ancestors and national heroes once felt. Nowadays we see Filipinos participating in corruption in all forms, in all levels and even in every opportunity. Some may not be participating in corruption but they are very indifferent towards the situation. By not working as a team to eliminate the cancer of corruption in society this just demonstrates the lack of living up to the spirit of what Bayanihan truly is.
